Women’s Initiative hosts Ms. Ninive Calegari

Invited by Women’s Initiative of United Way, Ms. Ninive Calegari will be speaking at their annual spring event on April 6th, 2011.

Ms. Calegari is a bilingual educator, author, filmmaker, co-founder of 826 Valencia, and former CEO of 826 National. Both organizations are dedicated to support students, ages 6-18, with their writing skills, and to help teachers get their students excited about the literary arts.

In a phone conversation with La Prensa, Calegari stated that these programs target children who come from low-income households, and a large percent of them have English as a second language. Definitely, it is the case at the location in San Francisco, since the center is situated in a mostly Latino neighborhood.

Ms. Ninive Calegari

During the last few years, Calegari has worked hard to support teachers and educators. She is co-author with Dave Eggers and Daniel Moulthrop of the New York Times bestselling book Teachers Have It Easy: The Big Sacrifices and Small Salaries of America’s Teachers.

They understand a good teacher has the power to change the course of a life. They can move a child from poverty to promise by providing him or her with the skills and confidence necessary to be carried into adulthood—yet because teachers in the United States have historically had an average annual salary lower than their peers with similar educational backgrounds, the conclusion is, their salary should increased.

Based on the book, Calegari and Eggers developed The Teacher Salary Project. The mission is to honor effective teachers and to bring awareness to their importance to our democracy and economy.  The Teacher Salary Project is a feature-length documentary film, interactive online resource, and national outreach campaign that delves into the core of our educational crisis as seen through the eyes and experiences of the nation's teachers.

Through the above mentioned project, the film American Teacher was created and it will be premiere on May 3rd of 2011. Remembering that this day is also National Teachers Day. The film was produced by Calegari, Dave Eggers, produced and directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth, and edited by filmmaker Brian McGinn.

Calegari is planning to share some clips of the film during the event on April 6th presented by Owens Corning that will take place at Owens Corning World Headquarters in downtown Toledo. The program starts at 5:00PM.
