Margaret Wong hosts Mexican Consul Sánchez Ventura and staff

On March 9, 2011 immigration attorney Margaret Wong held a luncheon at her Cleveland office to improve Mexican-American relations with Mexican Consul Vicente Sánchez Ventura and staff and many Latino leaders from Cleveland and Canton.

Wong expressed interest in improving collaboration between the Chinese and Latino communities of Cleveland and surrounding regions. She discussed the needs and trials of her undocumented clients face and requested the Mexican consul’s assistance in disseminating important information.

“Most are so busy working and raising families that they do not worry about immigration,” she said; adding the average undocumented worker contributes $25,000 in taxes.

She said immigration is a larger issue that affects business growth and opportunities between the nations. Using TN status, a special non-immigrant status visa negotiated as part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to improve labor flow between the three nations, Wong said Mexicans have a difficult time receiving the visa—“They simply do not trust us,” said Wong.

She urged Consul Sánchez to raise the issue for fair opportunity, adding business opportunities are neglected because of false assumptions that countries like Mexico and even China are undeveloped and poor.
 

“Views on immigration will change when we learn about the community,” said Consul Sánchez.

He  said more than 45 million Mexicans and Mexican-Americans are estimated to be living in the United States and contributing to the economy through various sectors, but stereotypes are still prevalent, “thanks to Hollywood.”
 

He said in states like Michigan and Ohio, Mexican professionals are beginning to emerge, increasing visibility by forming professional organizations, promoting culture and the contributions they make to the U.S. society. He said relationships are two-sided and the violent images in main stream media of drug cartels, with murders focusing too much on the negative rather than the positive possibilities.

“We have to find solutions from every side… we need to create bridges to opportunities, not walls,” he said. With 51 consulates across the United States, Mexico has more representatives than any other country and Sánchez added there is still a greater need.

He frequents Cleveland and other cities in Ohio twice a year and said the changing population and demographics of the state have increasing demands and require greater presence and representation. His office has jurisdiction over Michigan and Northern Ohio; Columbus and Southern Ohio are represented by the Consulate in Indianapolis, Indiana.

According to the 2010 Census, Latino population has increased to 63 percent, comprising 3.1 percent of Ohio’s greater population.

A new initiative started by the Consulate- Sister Cities, is developing partnerships between educational institutions in the U.S. and Mexico as well as business opportunities.

Willam J. Healy II, Mayor of Canton, said his city has worked closely with the Mexican Consulate to establish relations with Sister City Saltillo, Mexico. He said with more Latinos making Canton home there are increased opportunities to improve relationships and dismantle stereotypes while positioning the city as prime location for business ventures.
 

“I coined a term—Reverse NAFTA— the impression among our contingency is that NAFTA is sending manufacturing jobs overseas, we want to realize there are opportunities to bring more jobs here.”

Healy said along with economic possibilities the program also enriches the culture and educational elements. He applauded Wong for hosting the luncheon adding with a partnership between her and the consul there will be greater possibilities to look forward to.

 Sánchez said promoting education is a core mission that has tremendous support from sponsors. The consulate hosts an annual Day of Children/Books in April, and donates 1,000 books.  “Día del los Niños – Día de los Libros” will be held in April.
