Fun family activities at the Mazza Museum with Funday Sunday

Findlay: The Mazza Museum has the distinction of being the first and largest teaching museum in the world, specializing in the original artwork from picture books. Its mission is to promote literacy through its educational programs and to collect, exhibit and preserve original art from children’s books.

Goals of the museum include: encouraging visitors to view the best works of art available in the field of children’s book illustration, provide exemplary guided tours, present educational opportunities to both children and adults, serve as a center for study of the art of children’s books, work cooperatively with public and private schools, develop creative educational programs, offer museum-quality storage to archive original materials, and provide gallery space to exhibit original works along with corresponding books and teaching tools.

Some of the Mazza Museum’s programs include: public presentations by noted illustrators and authors of children’s picture books, family-focused events such as Storytelling Under the Stars and Funday Sunday, Mazza Museum School Extension Program (schools participate in seven counties), school tours and programs (busloads of children visit from the tri-state area), docent-led tours for adults and children, national traveling exhibits, young authors and artists conferences

Last Funday Sunday’s theme was “Dinosaurs.” Staff and volunteers from the museum prepared several stations of activities for children and their families to learn about dinosaurs and explore their creativity and imagination through digging for dino-candy fossils, decoration, dancing, and more. Over 550 people attended the event.  

One of the stations, coordinated by Andreanna Rivera-Pérez, presented “Dinos of Latin America,” offering instruction about the location where fossils were found, prehistoric sites, Latino culture related activities and bilingual storytelling.

Next Funday Sunday is schedule for April 3, 2011, from 1:30PM to 3:00 PM. The theme is “The Wild West.” Admission is gratis.

El Museo Mazza se distingue por ser el primer museo educativo más grande en el mundo especializado en arte de libros ilustrados. Su misión es promover la literatura a través de programas educativos y coleccionar, exhibir y preservar piezas originales de arte de libros de niños.

El museo pretende que sus visitantes vean los mejores trabajos de arte disponibles en el campo de la ilustración infantil, proveer visitas guiadas, presentar oportunidades educativas a niños y adultos, servir como centro de estudio para libros de niños, trabajar en cooperación con escuelas privadas y públicas, desarrollar programas creativos de educación, ofrecer espacio adecuado para el archivo de materiales originales, proveer un lugar en la galería para exhibir trabajos relacionados a dichos libros y materiales educativos.

Algunos de los programas que el Museo Mazza ofrece son: presentaciones al público de ilustradores y autores de libros de niños, eventos familiares tales como Cuentos Bajo las Estrellas (Storytelling Under the Stars) y Domingos Divertidos (Funday Sunday), programas de extensión a las escuelas (de las cuales han participado de siete condados), giras presentadas por docentes para adultos y niños, exhibiciones a nivel nacional, conferencias de autores y artistas jóvenes.

El tema del pasado “Domingo Divertido” fue “Dinosaurios”. Más de 550 personas atendieron el evento. El personal y los voluntarios del Museo prepararon varias estaciones con actividades para niños y sus familias para que pudieran aprender y explorar la creatividad y la imaginación a través de la búsqueda de fósiles de dino-dulces, decoraciones, bailes y más.

Una de las estaciones fue coordinada por Andreanna Rivera-Pérez que presentó “Dinosaurios de Latino América”  ofreciendo instrucción acerca de los lugares donde se encontraron fósiles, sitios prehistóricos, actividades relacionadas a la cultura latina y una sesión de cuenta cuentos en inglés y en español.

El próximo Domingo Divertido será el 3 de Abril de la 1:30 a las 3:30 de la tarde. La admisión es gratuita.
