Sofía Quintero Art & Cultural Center elects officers

The Board of Directors of the Sofía Quintero Art & Cultural Center (SQACC) elected officers at its February 2011 meeting, namely, Alberto González, president; Lourdes Santiago, vice president; Arturo Quintero, treasurer; and Dr. Duane Rodríguez-Winter, secretary.
Dr. González is a professor of Communication at Bowling Green State University. He has published five books and numerous articles on communication & culture. His most recent publication is Our Voices: Essays in Culture, Ethnicity, and Communication, 5th Edition (Oxford University Press).
Dr. González stated that, “the Board will continue directing efforts toward quality programs and community outreach and partnerships to maintain our standing as the premier Latino art and cultural center in the region.”
Lourdes Santiago is a senior attorney for the City of Toledo and has been involved with SQACC for numerous years.
Arturo M. Quintero was married to SQACC’s namesake Sofia Alfaro Quintero. Arturo is employed by the City of Toledo as an assistant prosecutor in Toledo Municipal Court. He is active at SS Peter and Paul Parish.
Dr. Rodríguez-Winter has been a strong supporter of SQACC since its inception. He is a firm believer in the power embodied in the Latino/Latina community. Duane has been involved in community mental health for over 20 years and is currently working as a psychiatric contractor for Family Services of NW Ohio. Duane’s wife, María, is the cofounder of SQACC.
SQACC hosts 5th Annual Entre Amigos fundraiser
On Wednesday, March 16, 2011, SQACC will hold its 5th annual Entre Amigos celebrity wait-style fundraiser.
According to its Grants & Development Coordinator Milva Valenzuela Wagner, “Due to the popularity of this event, two seatings are available, 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.” This year Entre Amigos will be held at Good Morning Holland Diner on 1007 S. McCord, Holland, OH. Guests will enjoy a Mexican buffet.
Mozos Famosos include: Deb Ortiz-Flores (Executive Director, Lucas County Department Job and Family Services), John A. Escobar, FIC (Financial Representative, Modern Woodmen of America), Toledo Councilman Mike Craig, Linda Ewing (Senior Vice President, Fifth Third Bank), Isabel Escobar (Acting Director, University of Toledo Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women ), Gary Johnson (President, American Flooring Installers), Mike Szuberla (Program Director, Toledo GROWs), Dee Sabo (Producer, Martin & Martin Agency, Inc.) and the Honorable Keila D. Cosme.
Modern Woodmen of America is presenting a challenge grant to SQACC and will match up to $2,500 of monies raised at Entre Amigos. Funds raised will be used for programs at SQACC.
According to SQACC Executive Director Joe Balderas, “Current programs include: Youth Work Programs, Boat Building Program, Community Gardens, Bike Restoration Program, and cultural programs such as First Friday and Día de los Muertos.”
Those who didn’t have the opportunity to attend First Friday at SQACC will be able to see some of the work of artist Veronica Englert, who was featured at the last event on March 4th. Her art will be on sale and a percentage will go to the Center.

El miércoles 16 de marzo, el Centro de Arte y Cultura Sofía Quinteros estará llevando a cabo la 5ta recaudación de fondos anual Entre Amigos.
Debido a la popularidad de este evento habrá dos horarios de atención: 5:00PM y 7:00PM.
Este año Entre Amigos será en el local de José Carlos Méndez quien es dueño de Good Morning Holland Diner ubicado en 1007 S. McCord, Holland, OH. Los boletos son $20 por adelantado o $25 en la puerta, los niños pagan $5. Se servirá un buffet mexicano.
