OCHLA partners with OHCC to bring Latino business issues to the legislature

The Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs (OCHLA) will host the 2011 Legislative Visit Day and Luncheon in partnership with the Ohio Hispanic Chambers of Commerce on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 from 8:30 am – 3:00 pm.  

Legislative Visit Day brings Latino business leaders to Columbus for a full day of advocacy and networking with legislators on issues of workforce, economic, and small business development policy.

“The Ohio Latino Affairs Commission in partnership with the Ohio Chambers of Commerce is ready, able, and willing to work with elected officials to find common goals to strengthen Ohio. We are committed to building our most valuable resource: people and to promoting small business success,” said Lilleana Cavanaugh, OCHLA  Executive Director.

According to an OCHLA press release, Ohio has experienced a 22.4 percent Latino population growth since 2,000 and they are impacting Ohio’s economy in a positive way.  There are more than 7,100 Latino-owned businesses in Ohio and receipts for those businesses top $1 billion with receipts for all Latino-run businesses approaching $1.3 billion.  Nationally, immigrants represent 12.5% of all business owners and are 30% more likely to start a business than non-immigrants.

The OCHLA was created in 1977 under Governor Jim Rhodes with a mandate to advise state government on issues affecting Latino Ohioans; connect the diverse Latino communities across the state; and build the capacity of community organizations so they may better serve the Latino population of Ohio .
