Columbia Gas of Ohio begins meter readings

Columbia Gas has announced the next phase of the Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system, as monthly meter readings commenced on January 3, 2011 across the Northwest Ohio Operating area, virtually eliminating the need to calculate customers’ gas consumption every other month.


The Northwest Ohio service area includes the communities of: Toledo, Sylvania, Holland, Maumee, Perrysburg, Rossford, Oregon, Northwood, Walbridge, Millbury, Curtice, Clay Center, Genoa, Elmore, and Woodville.

Approximately 180,000 natural gas meters across the Northwest Ohio Operating area have been upgraded with new AMR devices. The installation took approximately 18 months to complete and reflects a $9 million investment in Northwest Ohio.

The AMR system uses radio technology to automatically read the meter from a vehicle. As the specially equipped vehicle drives by, it sends a signal to the AMR, which in turn transmits the meter reading data to a computer in the vehicle. The AMR is powered by its own long-life battery and does not draw from a home’s electrical system.

Columbia Gas is implementing the AMR system, with monthly meter readings, statewide. Currently the company is on pace to have all 1.4 million meters in their service territory complete within five-years.

The AMRs are part of a series of upgrades as part of our Doing More for You commitment. These advancements are designed to enhance our services, and include Simple Energy Solutions, Riser Replacement Program and Customer
Service Line Replacement.
