DIA, zoo could get boost through bill

LANSING, Nov. 10, 2010 (AP): The Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Zoo could be in position to ask taxpayers for more money under bills approved in the state Senate.

The bills approved by 35-2 and 33-4 votes Wednesday would allow counties to form authorities that could ask voters for property taxes to fund arts institutes or increased property taxes to fund zoos.

The bills now go to the House.

The taxes would have to be approved by voters in the region to take effect.

Zoo authorities could ask for up to 0.2 mills, up from the 0.1 mills now allowed.

Art institute authorities could ask for up to 0.2 mills.

It could raise millions of dollars for the Detroit Institute of Arts if approved by the Legislature and voters in southeastern Michigan.

The bills are Senate bills 1578-79.
