From human rights to science: Campus-wide awareness on Latino contributions
ANN ARBOR, Oct. 1, 2010: Students will commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month 2010 on the University of Michigan campus, learning and participating in debates about Latino contributions to science, civil rights, culture and more.
The campuswide events are part of a program created jointly by students and U-M departments
Among program highlights in October:
-- Researcher Eloy Rodríguez will talk about the history of Mexican medicinal remedies and how they have been used to develop modern pharmaceuticals.
-- Michael Olivas of the University of Houston Law Center will discuss his documentary about the history of Latino desegregation in Texas.
-- Mexican journalist Lidya Cacho will discuss circumstances surrounding her being jailed for denouncing a high profile pedophile network.
-- José Moya, leading researcher on immigration; will talk about Latino immigration to Europe.
“Hispanic Heritage Month events are an important opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and the broader Michigan community to learn more about the history, culture and everyday lives of the fastest growing ethnic population in the United States,” said María Cotera, director of the Latina/o Studies Program at U-M.
“The diverse set of events this year, ranging from a film screening and discussion led by renown legal scholar Michael Olivas to a 'talk show' with leading Latin American journalist and activist Lydia Cacho, promise to be both entertaining and informative,” she said.
For Paul Arias, Hispanic Heritage Month Planning Committee chair and doctoral student in engineering, the emphasis in the sciences is important.
“Our culture is more visible in art and music, while contributions of individuals to the sciences are less visible,” he said. “Our group hopes to inspire everyone by highlighting how Latinos contribute positively to society at large, and show them that important and global science contributions occur in open multicultural societies.”
U-M has a wide network of Latino student groups and supports research focused on Latino population in Michigan and the nation. Academic programs like Latino/a Studies in American Culture are vibrant. Many campus events during the academic year, including La Celebración Latina and Festival Latino, are attended by members of the entire university community.
Deise Benítez of the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs, who has worked on the HHM Planning Committee, says the 2010 UM Hispanic Heritage events are reflective of the multidisciplinary and collaborative nature of the work among student leadership and different departments creating a world class program.
“This year, the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee has mobilized the Latino community on campus to produce quality programs focused around awareness, academia, the arts and leadership," she said.
On Oct. 10, the history of Latino desegregation in the United States, with Texas as the focus, will be illuminated at the screening of the documentary “A Class Apart,” created by Michael Olivas, who is the William B. Bates Distinguished Chair of Law and director of the Institute of Higher Education Law & Governance at the University of Houston. The screening is organized by Latino/a Studies at American Culture Program. The film will be followed by Q&A.
Eloy Rodríguez, leading international biochemist and Cornell researcher scientist will give a lecture on Oct 12, 2010 titled “The Great Encounter of 1492 and the Birth of the Diverse New World,” which highlights the Aztec physician Martin de la Cruz, who in 1552 wrote, illustrated and published the first herbal book on natural botanical medicines in the New World.
This year’s events are a collaboration between the Hispanic Heritage Month Planning Committee and the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs, Latina/o Studies, Romance Languages and Literatures Department, College of Pharmacy, College of Engineering, Center for Engineering Diversity and Outreach, Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, Michigan Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, University Union Arts and Programs, Human Rights Through Education , Center for Ethics in Public Life, La Salud, School of Public Health, LACS, and the School of Social Work
