Cleveland Public Library celebrates Carnegie West Branch’s Centennial of Service

CLEVELAND: Cleveland Public Library (CPL) will celebrate the 100^th anniversary of its Carnegie West Branch, located at 1900 Fulton in the heart of Cleveland’s historic Ohio City neighborhood, on August 28, 2010.

Carnegie West is the largest and oldest CPL branch in the city. Built in 1910 and named after the godfather of U.S.-American libraries, Andrew Carnegie, the building was designed by Edward Tilton, an architect renowned for his work on libraries and the main immigration building on Ellis Island in New York. The branch’s beautifully restored exterior features red brick with terracotta and limestone flourishes, medallions, and floral motifs, while its interior features original artwork depicting classic scenes from childhood literature.

The Carnegie West Branch offers an array of services to its patrons, from seasonal tax workshops and computer classes to the annual Alfred Hitchcock film festival to free summer lunches for kids and children’s reading club in the summer and winter.

“This grand old building is a cornerstone of the Ohio City neighborhood, and we are proud to still be here after 100 years,” said branch manager Bill Bradford. “We look forward to providing the next century of service for our patrons.”

The event begins at 2:00 p.m. in Novak Park, which surrounds the Carnegie West Branch, and attendees will be treated to a fascinating tour of this architectural gem. Festivities will include live musical entertainment by White House Band, Brookshire Quintet and Cleveland Institute of Music performers. Children’s crafts, popcorn, a live puppet show, balloon animals, and refreshments will also be provided. Look back at 100 years of photographs from the library’s archives.

“CPL has a storied history of providing a place for the people of Cleveland to dream, create, and grow, and our Carnegie West Branch has long provided this perfect environment for endless discovery,” said Felton Thomas, executive director of CPL.
