Auditor's error costly for North Olmsted

NORTH OLMSTED, August 2, 2010 (AP): Officials say a Cleveland area school system has been shortchanged $310,000 because a subdivision paid taxes to the wrong school district for two years.

The Cuyahoga County auditor's office mistakenly put the neighborhood and its 62 homes in the Olmsted Falls school district, instead of North Olmsted.

The error was discovered by a homeowner who noticed an unexpected $10 increase in his property tax bill and that the money was not earmarked for the North Olmsted schools, where 12 of his children attended classes.

North Olmsted Mayor Kevin Kennedy says the residents should receive refunds shortly.

But Olmsted Falls school officials say they haven't committed to repaying anything. The two school districts are in negotiations.
