Michigan bill targets undocumented immigrant marriage

LANSING, June 23, 2010 (AP): A Michigan lawmaker plans legislation designed to stop undocumented immigrants from getting marriage licenses.

The bills upcoming from Republican Rep. Dave Agema of Grandville would require marriage license applicants to show two forms of identification.

That could include state-issued ID cards, Social Security cards, birth certificates, or other proof of residency.

A person who isn’t a citizen could get a marriage license using a visa, passport or other proof of being in the U.S. with documentation.

The bills come after lawsuits in two west Michigan counties over Social Security card requirements that critics say were denying undocumented immigrants marriage licenses.

The bills will face opposition and could be blocked in the Democratic-run House.
