Shen Yun: Dance of Divine Beings graces State Theatre

Shen Yun literally means ‘beauty of divine beings dancing’ and the New York based dance company elevated the audience’s senses at State Theatre on May 29, 2010.
Ben Freed has been a host with Shen Yun for the past four years, providing bilingual introductions during performances. “I think the only other audience that rivaled Cleveland was Toledo,” Freed said at the after performance VIP reception.
“Excellent,” declared Philip B. Belzunce, a holistic psychologist. He said the flow of energy from the dancers, and the synergy of the music transformed him. Belzunce added the balance between yin and yang was beautifully maintained throughout and he appreciated the introductions before each segment.
Shen Yun has three dance companies performing classical Chinese ballet and ethnic dance portraying folk tales of divine beings leading mankind to gentle harmony. Opera and Symphony too. The delicate and vivacious dance moves trace their roots through 5,000 years of Chinese history, merging gentle movements with high jumps and stylized tumbling.
The young dancers are mostly teenagers and train at the Fei Tian Academy of the Arts in New York and perform as apprentices. The company orchestra combines in harmony a mélange of Western and Chinese instruments. Tenors sing a powerful word in Chinese and an interactive background takes the audiences to uniquely Chinese landscapes. Watching Shen Yun perform is a vivid visual and audio treat.
Simple props of feather fans, drums, elongated sleeves, and handkerchiefs enhance dancer’s movements and synchronize the flow. The costumes are customized to each ethnic region bringing the snowy regions of Tibet and rice paddies of Miao Village to the stage.
“There were 400 costumes used in tonight’s performance,” said Guimin Guan, a tenor with Shen Yun. He said the company celebrates ethnic Chinese cultures and traditions that are forbidden by the communist nation of China. The stories highlight the plight of a people struggling to practice Fulan Dafa—a spiritual system inspired by Buddhist teachings of morality truthfulness and compassion.
Freed said the stories preserve a culture and pass values and beliefs from one generation to the next, especially in times of adversity.
The most spellbinding segment, ‘Nothing Can Block the Divine Path’ features a contemporary mother and daughter brutally persecuted by the Communist police for practicing Falun Dafa exercises in a park. The intense segment is a tear jerker that also carries a message of hope—good will triumph over evil.
“Bad things happen in dark places, and we are trying to bring light to this issue,” said Lucia Dunn, Faculty Advisor of Falun Dafa Group at the Ohio State University. She thanked Cleveland and Playhouse Square for the warm reception and hoped Shen Yun will perform again and enlighten the public of the plight and suffering of people in China.
Councilwoman Mamie Mitchell, Ward 6, presented Shen Yun with a Resolution of Recognition on behalf of Martin Sweeney and thanked Shen Yun for sharing a unique part of Chinese culture and traditions. “The backgrounds are beautiful and the performances really elevate you to higher awareness,” said Mitchell.

Ópera y ballet Shen Yun conmueve a la audiencia

CLEVELAND: (el 29 de Mayo del 2010): Con gran agilidad y gracia, los bailarines de Shen Yun saltaban y giraban en el aire conmoviendo a la audiencia.
Los miembros de la compañía de baile Shen Yun han viajado alrededor del mundo con la meta de restaurar y llevar el verdadero baile clásico y bailes étnicos de la China que ellos dicen que el gobierno comunista de la república ha vetado al igual que sus creencias religiosas.
Los bailarines encontraron un teatro completamente lleno a capacidad en el Playhouse Square en Cleveland, el sábado, 29 de Mayo del 2010.
Ben Freed, maestro de ceremonias y un antiguo bailarín del Shen Yun, dijo:
“En el 1949 cuando el partido comunista entró en el poder en China, hubo campañas para sacar toda la oposición hacia el gobierno y quitar el origen de la cultura China. Hay ciertos sistemas de creencias en China que simplemente no son permitidas como el budísmo, el taoísmo y el confucianismo y cualquier actividad religiosa.”
El evento incorporó segmentos de ballet y ópera, ilustrando 5.000 años de historia de China.
Los bailes variaron entre acrobacias difíciles al son de los tambores y movimientos elocuentes del ballet al ritmo de instrumentos típicos de la China y del oeste.
Chia-Chi Lin, conductora de la orquesta de Shen Yun, dijo los creyentes del Falun Dafa han sido perseguidos desde el 1997.

Y las historias variaban entre cuentos triumfantes, como el guerrero que mató a un tigre, y cuentos de desesperación, como una madre y su pequeña hija que fueron perseguidas por su fe en su religión de Falun Dafa. La policía arrestaron a la madre y muere. Pero el cuento se terminó con seres divinos que descendieron para levantar a la madre hacia el cielo.
En otro cuento parecido, los budístas descendieron del cielo para apoyar a un hombre que fue arrestado y golpeado porque portaba un cartelón que decia que la religión Falun Dafa es buena.
La organización Shen Yun, que se formó en el 2006, consiste de tres compañias de baile con su sede central en Nueva York, es independiente de el gobierno de China, y sus miembros viven en los Estados Unidos.
Mamie Mitchell, miembro del consejo de Cleveland, le presentó una resolución de reconocimiento a Shen Yun, y Lucia Dunn, lider del grupo Falun Dafa de la universidad de Ohio State, dijo que espera que la compañia de baile pueda seguir llevando ese importante mensaje.
