St. John’s Jesuit seeks Latinos

Started in 1995, the Toledo 2020 Program is a St. John’s Jesuit High School initiative meant to give talented minority students with limited income the opportunity to attend St. John’s. Over the years hundreds of 2020 graduates have been launched into college and successful careers. Today, 56 students are part of the program.

“Through 2020 we not only offer tuition relief, but we also ensure that other needs of our students are met,” said Fr. Tom Doyle, S.J., director of the program. Among ways the school helps its 2020 students is by requiring all freshman students to attend an after school study table. “We find if a student gets off to the right start as a freshman, it enhances their entire experience,” said Fr. Doyle.

While the strong college preparatory curriculum can be daunting for some, the director explained that St. John’s provides many supports for students. “Our goal is to see each student through to graduation. Over the years we have used many strategies to ensure their success. The 2020 program has a history of helping students make the most of their talents.”

Many times students may need an academic boost or have family issues, which impact achievement. These challenges are not ignored. “We tailor our program to help each student. Care for the individual is a core part of the Jesuit mission of education. It is key to everything we do,” Fr. Doyle said.

Building up a larger Latino population is one of Fr. Doyle’s goals. “I came her from Marquette High where we had a large Latino student population. We know Latino families are often familiar with Jesuits and our Catholic tradition. I’d welcome any interested families to call and come in for a visit.”
