Defendant says ex-Detroit mayor took bribes

DETROIT, Feb. 21, 2010 (AP): The Detroit Free Press is reporting that a businessman who pleaded guilty in an ongoing corruption probe has told federal investigators he paid $100,000 in bribes to former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to secure lucrative city contracts.

The newspaper reports Sunday that former Cobo Center contractor Karl Kado of West Bloomfield told the FBI he paid $290,000 to Kilpatrick's father, Bernard Kilpatrick.

The Free Press says in its report that it has reviewed government documents and interviewed people familiar with the probe.

Neither Kilpatrick nor his father have been charged in the probe.

Kado is awaiting sentencing for paying bribes to protect multimillion-dollar contracts for downtown Detroit's convention center.
