HS Wrestling: No. 2 Graham defeats No. 1 Blair, 36 to 21

No. 2 Graham High School ( St. Paris , Ohio) became the national leader in high school wrestling by defeating no. 1 Blair Academy (New Jersey) on January 30, 2010 , at Graham. Apple Valley (Minnesota) will probably move to no. 2, dropping Blair to no. 3.

Genoa , Ohio native Felipe Martínez defeated Blair’s no. 3 Austin Ormsbee, in the 140 pound division, 10 to 3 , with Martínez garnering 5 points for a successful “cement mixer” in the first period.

Head Coach Jeff Buxton of Blair complimented Graham on their win. Graham Head Coach Jeff Jordan was elated. Both teams have dominated Ohio ’s Walsh Ironman Tournament the past 10 years.

One wonders whether Coach Buxton’s decision to bump up the lower weights to “plug up a hole in the middle” spelled disaster for his squad. Martínez was originally scheduled to wrestle no. 1 Chris Villalonga, but with the “bump-up,” Martínez grappled with Ormsbee. Villalonga was successful in his match against Matt Stephens.
