BGSU Lively Arts Calendar, Sept. 30-Oct. 14, 2009

Oct. 1—Pianist Prisca Benoit will lead a master class from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall of BGSU’s Moore Musical Arts Center. Benoit is a professor of piano at the Paris National Superior Conservatory. Free and open to the public.

Oct. 1—Ben Percy, a BGSU College of Arts and Sciences Visiting Writer, will read from his work at 7:30 p.m. in Prout Chapel on the Bowling Green campus. Percy, who teaches creative writing in the master of fine arts program at Iowa State University, is the author of a novel and two books of short stories. His fiction and nonfiction have been read on National Public Radio, performed at Symphony Space and published by Esquire and the Chicago Tribune, among other publications. His reading is free.

Oct. 1—BGSU’s 88th theatre season opens with “Burning Patience,” by Antonio Skármeta, at 8 p.m. in the Joe E. Brown Theatre in University Hall. Subsequent performances are at 8 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3, and at 2 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4. Translated by Marion Peter Holt, the play is Skármeta’s stage adaptation of his novel, “Ardiente paciencia (Burning Patience),” which is also the source material for the 1995 Academy Award-nominated Italian film “Il postino (The Postman).” Sara Chambers, an instructor of theatre and film, will direct the production, which may not be suitable for all audiences. Oct. 1—The BGSU Student Jazz Combos will give a free concert at 8 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center.

Oct. 2—Graphic designer Mark Murphy, a BGSU graduate and principal of Murphy Design Inc., will discuss his recent work in a BGSU ARTalk at 5 p.m. in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater. Free.

Oct. 2—BGSU’s Wind Symphony, Concert Band and University Band will perform at 8 p.m. in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Free.

Oct. 3—The Young People’s Concert Series at BGSU’s College of Musical Arts opens with “Clarinet Collage” at 11 a.m. in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. The BGSU clarinet studio will feature the clarinet family in a special storytelling concert, recommended for children ages 5 and older. Tickets, $2 for adults and $1 for children, will be available at the door 30 minutes before the performance.

Oct. 4—Violinist Penny Thompson Kruse and pianist Thomas Rosenkranz will present a Faculty Artist Series recital at 3 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall of BGSU’s Moore Musical Arts Center. Trumpeter Charles Saenz will assist on the program, titled “Made in the USA” and including works by John Adams, Eric Ewazen and Lukas Foss. Free.

Oct. 5—Carolyn Putney, curator of Asian art at the Toledo Museum of Art, will discuss additions to the museum’s Asian collection in a BGSU ARTalk at 6 p.m. in 1101 Fine Arts Center. Free.

Oct. 5—BGSU will host a 7:30 p.m. reception for an exhibition of “Works from the Fine Arts Center Collection” in the center’s galleries foyer. Free.

Oct. 6—NEXUS, a Toronto-based percussion ensemble, will conduct a master class from 7-9 p.m. in Kobacker Hall of BGSU’s Moore Musical Arts Center. Members of the group are percussionists Bob Becker, Bill Cahn, Robin Engleman, Russell Hartenberger and Garry Kvistad. Formed in 1971, the group primarily performs contemporary classical music, although world music and 1920s xylophone rags are also in its repertoire. Free and open to the public.

Oct. 6—Student work in recent film production courses in BGSU’s Department of Theatre and Film will be featured in “Cine-Posium,” part of the Tuesdays at the Gish series at 7:30 p.m. in the Gish Film Theater. Screenings of individual and group projects by film majors will be accompanied by discussions that will include feedback from film faculty members and question-and-answer periods. The theater is located in Hanna Hall on the Bowling Green campus. Free.

Oct.  6—“Music from Bowling Green at the Manor House” opens with a concert by clarinet students from the BGSU studio of Kevin Schempf at 7:30 p.m. in Toledo’s Wildwood Metropark Manor House. Free.

Oct. 8—The BGSU Festival Forum will be held from 7:15-7:45 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. A pre-concert event, the forum will feature a talk on the NEXUS percussion ensemble’s Festival Series performance. Free and open to the public.

Oct. 8—BGSU’s Festival Series continues with a concert by the Toronto-based percussion ensemble NEXUS at 8 p.m. in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Formed in 1971, the group primarily performs contemporary classical music, although world music and 1920s xylophone rags are also in its repertoire. Oct. 11—BGSU’s Gish Film Theater will observe Lillian Gish’s Oct. 14th birthday with a 3 p.m. screening of her 1918 film, “Hearts of the World,” as part of its Sunday Matinees series. Lillian Gish plays a tragic war bride in the movie, which also stars her sister, Dorothy, and was directed by D.W. Griffith. “The Runaway Horse,” a 1908 French short, will also be shown. Providing piano accompaniment will be Stuart Oderman, silent film pianist at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, with commentary by Dr. Jan Wahl, a film historian from Toledo. The theater is located in Hanna Hall. Free.

Oct. 14—Jazz guitarist John Hart will conduct a master class at 3:30 p.m. in 2008 Moore Musical Arts Center on the BGSU campus. In addition to leading his own groups, Hart has performed with many top jazz artists, including Jimmy Smith, Lou Donaldson, James Moody, Mike Mainieri and the Maria Schneider Orchestra. Free.

Oct. 14—Praecepta, the student chapter of the Society of Composers Inc., which promotes new music activities in the Bowling Green community, will present a free program at 8 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall of BGSU’s Moore Musical Arts Center.
