Washington Local Schools and Read for Literacy offer invaluable lessons--free of charge

As immigrant populations continue to rise in Toledo, various community organizations are reaching out to the city’s new residents by offering programs of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Washington Local Schools is preparing for another year of its English Literacy/Civics Education Program. The program, which has been in existence for about 25 years, offers ESOL classes free of charge to the Toledo community.
Classes are held at Washington Local's Alternate Learning and Career Center one block south of Clover and Alexis, and are offered by the Northwest Ohio ABLE Consortium. ABLE (Adult Basic and Literacy Education) offers additional services, including GED and postsecondary education preparation, pre-employment training, and adult basic education.
Classes take place Tuesday thru Thursday each week under the instruction of Carol Fleischman and Najwa Vadawi, with the assistance of two class aides. Students can attend either morning classes from 9:00-11:30 a.m. or afternoon classes from 12:30-3:00 p.m. In order to offer an adequate level of attention to students, the program accommodates about 25 students per class.
Carol Fleischman, who has approximately 17 years of experience in education, said the program teaches practical skills that anyone living in the United States requires on a day-to-day basis.
“There are four Federal requirements that we teach, which are listening, speaking, reading and writing,” she said. “But we also have time designated for computer skills, and we cover citizenship, history and community events.”
Fleischman also emphasized the specialized nature of the program. Upon arrival, students take an entry test to measure their abilities, and individualized learning plans are created for each student.
The only prerequisite for the program is that participants be 18 years of age or older, which makes for a very diverse student base.
“We have all kinds of people from the age of 18 to 80,” Fleischman said. The ethnicities of her students are widely varied, and include Chinese, Russian, Polish, French, Mexican, Arabic, and Puerto Rican students, among others.
“The students’ response has been very, very enthusiastic. We like the group to be a good size because it really creates an atmosphere in [the classroom],” Fleischman concluded.

Toledo’s Read for Literacy Inc.
For students who may prefer one-on-one attention or require flexible scheduling, Toledo’s Read for Literacy Inc. is another option for English learners. A non-profit organization, Read for Literacy pairs volunteer tutors with adults to help combat illiteracy among the 30,000 adults in Lucas County who are reading at or below the basic level.
In March of this year, Read for Literacy expanded its services to accommodate the large and growing number of Spanish-speaking adults who are seeking help for not only reading but also understanding, speaking, and writing English as a new language.
Read for Literacy’s ESOL program differs from the original adult literacy program to help make its services more convenient for Spanish-speaking Toledoans. Firstly, the organization seeks to utilize tutors with at least a basic knowledge of Spanish to help facilitate the effectiveness of ESOL classes. Like all Read for Literacy tutors, they also receive training in the program’s methods and course books.
Other programs
Various community agencies are also offering their facilities as meeting places for ESOL students and their tutors, including South Toledo’s Adelante Inc. and Providence Center, the East Toledo Family Center, and the Friendly Center in North Toledo.
According to the program’s director, Jim Funk, the response from volunteers and students alike has been extremely positive. “When we originally advertised the need for tutors, there was a huge outpouring of interested volunteers,” he said. “So far, we’ve matched 18 pairs of tutors and students.”
Student interest has proven to be even greater than volunteer interest, however, creating the need for more tutors to accommodate the number of potential pairings. “We’ve still got 11 people on a waiting list, and we’re hoping to find 30 more tutors to meet future need as well,” Funk concluded.

Washington Local Schools y Read for Literacy ofrecen lecciones inestimables--gratis

Con el aumento de la población inmigrante en Toledo, varias organizaciones de la comunidad están ofreciendo ayuda a los nuevos residentes con programas de English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Washington Local Schools está preparándose para otro ano de su programa English Literacy/Civics Education. El programa, que ha existido por aproximadamente 25 años, ofrece clases sin pagar a la comunidad de Toledo.
Las clases se ubican en el Alternate Learning and Career Center de Washington Local, al sur de Clover y Alexis, y se ofrecen por el Northwest Ohio ABLE Consortium. ABLE (Adult Basic and Literacy Education) ofrece servicios adicionales que incluyen preparación para el GED y la educación posgraduada, formación preempleo, y educación básico de adultos.

Para los estudiantes que prefieren la atención individualizada, o que requieren un horario flexible, Read for Literacy Inc. de Toledo es otra opción para estudiantes de inglés. Una organización de caridad, Read for Literacy une tutores voluntarios con adultos para combatir el analfabetismo entre los 30,000 adultos en Lucas County que leen al nivel básico o bajo de ello.
En marzo de este año, Read for Literacy aumentó sus servicios para acomodar al número grande y aumentando de adultos hispanohablantes que buscan ayuda en no solo leer, sino también entender, hablar, y escribir inglés como nuevo idioma.
El programa ESOL de Read for Literacy es distinto del original programa de alfabetismo adulto para que sus servicios sean mas convenientes para Toledanos hispanohablantes. Principalmente, la organización quiere utilizar tutores con un conocimiento al menos básico de español para facilitar la eficacia de las clases ESOL. Como todos los tutores de Read for Literacy, también reciben entrenamiento en los métodos y libros de curso del programa.
Varias agencias de la comunidad también están ofreciendo sus facilidades como lugares donde los estudiantes y sus tutores pueden unirse, inclusos Adelante Inc. y Providence Center del sur de Toledo, East Toledo Family Center, y Friendly Center en el norte de Toledo.
