East Side’s Hollingworth is bringing high standards back to school

As of August 24, 2009, a new kind of school will be in session in Toledo. Located in the former Sacred Heart Elementary School in East Toledo, Ohio—the newly established Hollingworth School for the Talented and Gifted is currently accepting K-6 enrollment.
Terrence Franklin, Executive Director of the Hollingworth School, says that its fundamental goal is to offer a specialized environment and curriculum to a population that is often denied such opportunities.
“Our purpose is to reach out to talented and gifted students, but more specifically to those of disadvantaged families,” Franklin said. “We’re looking for children who have talent but may not have access to the resources to develop that talent.”
The kinds of resources offered by the Hollingworth School are meant to foster high level education in students who may not be challenged enough in traditional learning environments.
“Not only are many gifted students not being stimulated enough in school, but they are often mislabeled as having behavioral and academic problems,” said Franklin, who has seventeen years of experience working in education in the state of Ohio.
“Our goal is to eliminate that boredom and keep kids engaged in school!”
The primary method by which the school plans to keep students interested is maintaining small class sizes at Hollingworth. With no more than twenty students in each class, teachers will be able to be more attentive to individual students and offer each child the specialized instruction he or she needs.
Despite the focus on gifted and talented students, Franklin insists that students of all kinds are candidates for enrollment at Hollingworth School. “Everyone is welcome, regardless of academic ability,” he said. “Every student that comes through our doors will be operating at their highest level.”
Examples of this high level education include experience in fields that are unfortunately often lacking in under-privileged schools. Hollingworth School offers foreign language instruction, intensive courses in technology, exposure to the performing and fine arts, and potentially even distance learning with local colleges; and all before middle school.
While boasting a high-level education, the Hollingworth School is keeping things fun by partnering with Kids Unlimited to provide traditional extracurricular activities, character building, and team sports for students.
“We recognize that we’re going to have unique students of all kinds, and we want to demonstrate that we’re willing to operate at the same high standards that we expect of them,” said Franklin, who also expects parents of Hollingworth students to give their best.
“We will gladly provide the ladder for students to reach new heights, but the students and their families have an integral part in the school as well. We want families that will have a relationship with the school and are willing to work together,” concluded Franklin.
The aim of Hollingworth School for Talented and Gifted, offering quality education to all students, is something Franklin believes should have always been a fundamental nationwide goal.
“Urban high school dropout is starting to creep into middle school; we know what comes next. We can’t keep inputting the same philosophies, methods, and processes into at-risk education and expect an improvement in the outcome.
“It’s time to re-evaluate the values of the system and provide this support sooner rather than later.”

Estándares altos vuelven a la escuela en Hollingsworth

El 24 de agosto de 2009, un nuevo tipo de escuela estará en sesión en Toledo. Ubicada en la antigua escuela de Sacred Heart Elementary en el este de Toledo, Hollingworth School for the Gifted and Talented actualmente está aceptando la inscripción de los estudiantes K-6.
Terrence Franklin, Director Ejecutivo de Hollingworth School, dice que la meta fundamental de la escuela es ofrecer un ambiente y plan de estudios especializados a una población que a menudo se les niega esa oportunidad.
"Nuestro objetivo es llegar a los estudiantes talentosos y dotados, pero más específicamente a ellos de familias desfavorecidas," Franklin dijo. "Buscamos estudiantes que tengan talento, pero que quizá no tengan acceso a los recursos necesarios para desarrollar ese talento."
Los recursos ofrecidos por Hollingworth School fomentan un alto nivel de educación para estudiantes que tal vez se aburren en ambientes educativos tradicionales.

"Nuestra meta es eliminar ese aburrimiento y animar el interés en la escuela."
El método principal por lo cual piensan sostener el interés de los estudiantes es de mantener clases pequeñas. Con no más que veinte estudiantes en cada clase, los maestros podrán estar mas atentos a los estudiantes individuales y ofrecer la instrucción especializada que cada estudiante necesita.
A pesar del foco en los estudiantes dotados y talentosos, Franklin insista que niños de todos tipos son candidatos para inscripción en Hollingworth School. "Todo el mundo es bienvenido, independientemente de la capacidad académica," dijo. "Cada estudiante que entra por nuestras puertas funcionará a su propio nivel especializado."
Ejemplos de este alto nivel de educación incluyen acceso a campos que son desafortunadamente ausente en la mayoría de las escuelas desfavorecidas. Hollingworth School ofrece idiomas extranjeros, cursos intensivos de tecnología, exposición a las bellas artes, y potencialmente el aprendizaje a distancia con universidades locales; y todo antes de la escuela secundaria.
Aunque ofrece un alto nivel de educación, Hollingworth School también mantiene la diversión para sus estudiantes, trabajando conjuntamente con Kids Unlimited para proveer actividades y deportes tradicionales.
“Reconocemos que tendremos estudiantes únicos, y queremos demostrar que estamos dispuestos a operar según las mismas normas que esperamos de ellos," dijo Franklin, que también espera que los padres de los estudiantes den sus mejores esfuerzos. "Nos gustaría proporcionar la escalera para que los estudiantes alcancen nuevas alturas, pero los estudiantes y sus familias también tienen una parte integrante en la escuela.
