“The Mona Project”

The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library hosts an exhibit titled “The Mona Project” by members of The Athena Art Society, Inc., on view now through the end of August at the Toledo Heights Branch Library, 423 Shasta Dr.
The Mona Project is an Athena fundraiser which consists of personal interpretations of the Mona Lisa by members of the Athena Art Society. The display includes 30 pieces of framed artwork.
The Mona Lisa is a globally recognized iconic oil painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. The 16th century portrait is located on the wall in the Louvre in Paris, France. The painting bears the title Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo. Gherardini was born in Florence in 1479 and the painting was commissioned by her husband Giocondo.
The Athena Art Society was founded in 1903 and is one of the oldest professional women’s art organizations in the country. Their mission is to promote and develop the visual arts and stimulate community participation. The organization provides annual scholarships, hosts juried and non-juried annual exhibitions for members, and supports other arts organizations through leadership and partnerships.
