Texting while driving ban effective July 19

Legislation recently passed by Cleveland City Council to prohibit text messaging on wireless handsets while driving in the City of Cleveland went into effect July 19, 2009.

Drivers caught texting while driving will be fined $100 for the first offense, $250 for the second offense, and up to $500 for the third offense.

“Last year, more than 2,000 people lost their lives and more than 300,000 were injured due to the use of cell phones while driving,” said Councilman Reed.  “This new law can save lives.  Please respect your own and others safety and don’t text and drive.”
