WMU paper to halve number of print editions

KALAMAZOO, June 9, 2009 (AP): The student newspaper at Western Michigan University will be printed half as often next school year while improvements are made to its online content.

The Western Herald has published a print edition each Monday through Thursday during the fall and spring semesters since 1991.

The paper no longer will be printed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning this fall as more emphasis is given to Internet publishing. The Western Herald is printed weekly during the summer.

Editors blame higher costs and less advertising revenue. The newspaper does not get university funding and is distributed free to most readers.

General manager Brian Abbott says the paper strives to be an objective source of news and to provide real-world journalism experience for the students.
