OCHLA’s Simms Howell recognized

Each year, members of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Ohio Chapter, Cincinnati Region VI, gather to celebrate the contributions of social workers and public citizens. Through their exemplary efforts and accomplishments, these individuals enhance the quality of life for citizens in Southwest Ohio.

The 2009 award recipients included: V. Anthony Simms Howell – Public Citizen of the Year, Ohio Latino Affairs Commission (OCHLA). The Public Citizen award recognizes an individual whose excellence in public service enhances the quality of life for citizens in the community and reflects the mission and values of the social work profession.

One of the founders of the Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA, Simms Howell has worked to advance the Latino community in business and education, writes Alfonso Cornejo, President, Hispanic Chamber—he actively volunteers with local, state and national organizations such as OCHLA, the League of United Latin American Citizens and Santa Maria Community Services.

Other recipients included: Michael Tebbe, LISW – Social Worker of the Year, Professor University of Cincinnati, School of Social Work; Bill (William) Darnell, LISW-S – Lifetime Achievement in Social Work, Drop Inn Center, Men’s Recovery Program; Kathleen Barnett, LISW-S – Outstanding Service to Social Work Profession, University Hospital, Psychiatric Emergency Services; Eileen Cooper Reed, Esq – Public Elected Official, President Board of Education, Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS); Tyrone Hamler, LSW – M.S.W. Student of the Year, University of Cincinnati; and Amanda Kazmierski – B.S.W. Student of the Year, Xavier University.

The award reception celebration was held at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. Dr. Stephanie Brzuzy, Social Work Chair, Xavier University served as MC.
