To the Editor of La Prensa,

Poorly explained reasons have left the Puerto Rican community of Lorain without their flag being raised at the Black River Landing site for the Memorial Day weekend. The flags posting is a new tradition to have the local community show their pride in their culture.

The flag pole and flags must be paid for by the ethnic community that wishes to have their culture displayed. Thanks to Councilman Dennis Flores, who paid the $2,000+ to have the pole and flag become a permanent display at Black River Landing, the Puerto Rican community was one of the first ethnic communities (along with the Mexican community) to pay to have their flags displayed.

In order to commemorate this event Councilman Dennis Flores organized with Freddie’s Boxing Team to raise the Puerto Rican Flag at the Black River Landing with the kids that are going to participate in the (PRCC) Puerto Rican Culture Committee’s Boxing Match on June 20, 2009, at the Spartan Bldg (old Lorain Catholic) as part of their program to celebrate this year’s title as the Spotlight Nationality of the 2009 International Festival.

The officially sanctioned Boxing Match will feature Lorain’s next contender for the professional boxing arena, Mr. Wilkins Santiago, who will participate in the PRCC Boxing Match as his last amateur match.

The Puerto Rican community is very proud to be called upon as this year's Spotlight Nationality and become part of the biggest celebration of Lorain's multi-ethnic community. Lorain is known as the “International City” because of the large number of diverse ethnic cultures that live in the City of Lorain.

The Lorain International Festival & Bazaar is the City’s way of showing off these cultures, which, in many ways, educates and illuminates the City with brotherhood and tolerance.

The PRCC requests that the residents of Lorain and surrounding communities participate in Lorain’s International Festival & Bazaar starting with the Boxing Match on June 20 and following the week-long festivities.

A special invitation to those who would like to know more of the Puerto Rican Culture, the PRCC is hosting an Elegant Evening of Culture on June 24, 2009, at DeLucas in the Park from 6pm to 12 midnight with Lydia Esparra as MC and many exciting Puerto Rican cultural presentations. Call PRCC Chair for more info at (440) 320-0295.

Sincerely,

Antonio Barrios, Chair PRCC
