Read! Create! Participate! Library debuts 2009 Summer Reading Club – June 8-August 1
Your Library is the perfect place to read all about your favorite things or even discover new hobbies. It’s also a great place to go with your friends and family for cool programs and events. These features are all part of the unique 2009 Summer Reading Club (SRC) theme, Read! Create! Participate!, beginning June 8 through August 1, 2009. Mark your calendars now!
Beginning June 8, please fill out an entry blank form at any library location. SRC, a free program of fun activities and great prizes, has three components: Juvenile Club for preschool through 5th grade; a Teen Club for grades 6th through 12th, and an Adult Club to help grown-ups Preschoolers may participate by having someone read to them.
This year’s Read! Create! Participate! theme encourages all ages to beat those summertime blues by coming to your library to read a new book, create something artistic or musical, and participate in your neighborhood branch library’s many offerings this summer, including SRC!
Nancy Eames, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library Youth Services Coordinator, says SRC participants can take an “imagination vacation” through reading books - youth and adults alike can open the door to new worlds and interests.
“Summer Reading Club has something for everyone. Summer reading is all about reading for fun and everyone from children to adults can earn great prizes just for reading,” said Eames.
The 2009 SRC Read! Create! Participate! features the following three divisions:
-
Juvenile Club – Preschoolers and children entering K-5th are encouraged to read at least 15 minutes a day, and are awarded prizes after reading 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 hours. Every child who reads 12 hours will earn a book to keep! As children reach the 20, 30, 40, or 50 hour and higher levels, they can enter to win system prizes provided by the Library Legacy Foundation such as gift cards for the Toledo Mud Hens, Barnes and Noble, and Toys R Us. (Note: Preschoolers may become SRC members by having someone read to them)
-
Teen Club – These junior high and high school-aged youth fill out an entry form for each book read and place it in a marked box at any branch location or at Main Library for drawings, which will be held throughout the summer. A grand prize drawing for prizes such as movie gift cards, Cedar Point tickets, Flip Mino pocket size camcorder, Guitar Hero (Playstation platform), and gift cards to Starbucks and iTunes will be held at the end of SRC.
Last year’s SRC saw more than 20,000 youth and adult participants! For the ninth straight year, TARTA has offered free transportation to Preschool through 12th grade SRC participants. Youth members of the 2009 SRC Read! Create!
Participate! need only show their SRC hang tag for free transportation to and from their favorite library in Lucas County.
A special Web page for SRC will be available the week of June 8th by logging on to toledolibrary.org. The Web site’s SRC section will link to SRC information, prize lists, a drawing of the week, and more. Teens may submit their entries online.
