Free dental care clinic in Detroit a big draw

DETROIT, May 16, 2009 (AP): Organizers of a free dental care and oral health education clinic in Detroit for adults had to turn some people away after a big crowd turned out.

WWJ-AM reports that the Michigan Day of Oral Health Outreach event Saturday at the Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry began about 9 a.m., and about an hour later more than 1,000 people were in line.

The event was promoted by the Michigan Department of Community Health. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said in a statement the clinic comes at a ``critical time'' when people are losing access to health insurance.

More than 200 volunteers planned to be on site to provide basic dental services such as fillings, extractions and minor denture repair to low-income adults on a first-come, first-served basis.
