“The community’s response to our organizing efforts has been so enthusiastic and positive,” remarks event organizer Charlie Fredrick. “Columbus has a really diverse set of grassroots organizing resources, and the number of people who have been eager to donate their tools, services, and energy to this project has been overwhelming—it’s exciting to realize the potential for progress in this community.”
The conference will provide an organizing space for students and community members throughout Ohio. Workshops will feature action-oriented discussions regarding topics such as urban gardening as a solution to agricultural inequality, the history of hip hop and social justice, histories of race, social change through the arts, using media to bridge the cultural gap, transportation and autonomy, y más.
The event will offer free admission, free childcare, free food, and free housing options for out-of-towners. Additionally, local community radio station WCRS will be recording workshops for podcast and use in future radio shows.
Confronting Racism: Building United Movements will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009, from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. at Mendenhall Laboratory on the OSU campus. An after party will be held at Victorian's Midnight Café, from 9 p.m.-1 a.m.
