UT science and mathematics education scholarship programs celebrate successful year

The UT3 and UT3 Noyce programs celebrated their most successful year yet by recognizing the outstanding commitment and effort of their students at the 2009 UT3 and UT3 Noyce Recognition Awards Dinner, held April 27, 2009.

The Judith Herb College of Education programs prepare science and mathematics teachers to teach in high-needs schools, where there is a national shortage of qualified teachers. The programs offer scholarships, internships, academic, and professional support.

The University of Toledo’s President Lloyd Jacobs and Ohio Senator Teresa Fedor commenced the evening, which highlights 18 UT3 teacher candidates and seven UT3 Noyce scholars, who have completed the programs this year.

These students will continue to be supported by the UT3 induction program for their first few years of teaching. The awards dinner also acknowledged community partners who contribute to the program’s success including: alumni, internship organizations, board, and scholarship committee members.

Toledo Public School administrators, mentor, and cooperating teachers were also recognized.

UT3 has nearly 50 teacher candidates this year, the highest number of students in the program, from different backgrounds, including career changers, college transfer students, and direct from high school students. UT3 offered three academic courses, which enabled teacher candidates, mentor teachers, and principals to explore and expand their background in science and mathematics education.

UT3 Noyce is a new addition to the annual dinner, as it has completed its first year at The University of Toledo. The fast-track program had seven scholars in its initial year, completing the requirements for an alternative teaching licensure in a five-month period.
