Law Day: Cindy Cohn at The City Club of Cleveland

As Legal Director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Cindy Cohn has been leading the fight against domestic surveillance.  Warrantless wiretapping cases present profound questions about the misuse of government secrecy and the state secrets privilege, the extent of unilateral presidential authority, and the role of intermediaries like telecommunications companies and Internet-service providers in protecting our privacy and assisting law enforcement.

Ms. Cohn will address an audience at noon on Friday, May 1, 2009, at The City Club of Cleveland.

The Obama Administration is facing one of its first big tests on executive authority and government secrecy in addressing the George W. Bush Administration’s warrantless wiretapping program. According to Cohn, the U.S. Government, with assistance from major telecommunications carriers including AT&T, has been engaging in a massive program of illegal dragnet surveillance of domestic communications and communications records of millions of ordinary U.S. Americans for at least the past eight years.

Law Day, celebrated annually on May 1, is a special day focusing on U.S.  heritage of liberty under law and how the rule of law makes its democracy possible.  This national day of celebration was officially designated by joint resolution of Congress in 1961. Every year, the American Bar Association is joined by national organizations, state and local bars, businesses, and schools, in conducting thousands of programs on the rule of law in a constitutional democracy.

This forum is being held in partnership with the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.

Tickets are $18 for members and $30 for non-members. Lunch is included. They can be purchased by calling The City Club at 216.621.0082 or visiting the website at:
