LSU’s baile of March 28 honors students and presents Shelly Lares

As described by Waite High School Maestro Josh Flores in his 2008 La Prensa article entitled “LSU scholarships yield valuable returns for the community,” since 1972, the Latino Student Union (LSU) at The University of Toledo has been a “staple of support for students pursuing a higher education.

“Initially, LSU was known as M.E.Ch.A (El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán),” but in 2003, the organization officially became expansively known as Latino Student Union, “a place for Latinos to turn to—for support and a little slice of familia in the pursuit of creating a better life.”

This year’s dance, scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Erie Street Market near downtown Toledo, marks the 37th year that the students of LSU turns to the community, seeking support for this important scholarship baile.

San Antonio’s Tejana-diva Shelly Lares, Toledo’s Grupo Azteca, and DJ Mi Gente are scheduled to perform. Shelly appeared at LatinoFest in 2006 and has won numerous awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year and Female Entertainer of the Year at the 2006 Tejano Music Awards. LSU provides its membership with scholarship opportunities, including recognizing this Saturday the following students: Alma Aguirre (recipient of the Latinos del Futuro Scholarship); and Ilario Estrada, Derek Mull, Jean Valderrama, Carlos Ruiz, Victoria Clark, Cristina Cortez, & Aurora Aguayo (with Unidos y Diversos Scholarships).

LSU scholarships are awarded to members primarily based upon involvement and contributions made to the organization.

It is important for the community to support this baile and LSU, whose officers include: José López, Carlos Ruiz, Misael Mayorga, and Cristina Cortez, with the advice and support of Sabina Elizondo-Serratos, UT’s Director of Latino Initiatives.
