BGSU hosts East Toledo Day, March 6

East Toledo middle-schoolers can calculate their personal carbon footprint in one of the activities planned for them this Friday, March 6, 2009, during Bowling Green State University’s East Toledo Day. The College of Education and Human Development will host more than 160 students from East Broadway Middle School from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. About 40 BGSU education majors will conduct special lessons for the visitors.

The annual event provides middle school students a taste of college life and pre-service teachers a “chance to get their feet wet with exciting hands-on activities and lesson plans,” said Sarah Griffith, a graduate assistant helping organize the program. The East Broadway visitors will also get a taste of college food when they have lunch in the Sundial Dining Center in Kreischer Quadrangle.

“This will be the first time many of the middle-schoolers have been on a college campus,” Griffith said. The exposure to campus is designed to make college seem more accessible and show youngsters the support and resources BGSU can provide. The event is part of BGSU’s participation in the federally funded GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) project.
