2009 Ruth Blank Venner Essay Contest
The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library has announced its annual Ruth Blank Venner Essay Contest. This year’s theme is Why my library book is late?
Participants are requested to write about some of the millions of strange but true reasons why library books are overdue! According to the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, “Now is your chance to really wow us with the most fantastic, incredible, reason why your book is late.”
This year’s essay contest is a 500 word maximum and is open to grades K through 12. Grade level essay categories are as follows: K-2nd grade, 3rd -5th, 6th -8th, and 9th –12th. Prizes will be awarded to winning essay entrants: 1st place $200, 2nd place $100, 3rd place $50 and 6 honorable mentions will be awarded $25 each. Prizes are provided by the Ruth Blank Venner Memorial Project of the Friends of the Library.
Contest essay forms are available at all Toledo-Lucas County Public Library branch locations, at Main Library, and on the Library’s Bookmobile (Outreach Services). Essays must be turned in by Saturday, April 4, 2009.
The late Ruth Blank Venner was a past president of the Friends of the Library and an active member. Mrs. Venner, who died in 1996, was married 44 years to the television news anchor Frank Venner.
