Velásquez addresses guestworker rights at UT Law Forum, Feb. 18

Baldemar Velásquez, president of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) and McArthur Fellow, will speak at The University of Toledo Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at noon, in the Law Center Auditorium.

Velásquez’s speech, titled “Human Rights of Guest Workers in Immigration Policy,” will examine the question of which rights should be extended to foreign guestworkers.

According to Velásquez, some of the policy decisions made during the last days of the presidency of George W. Bush have been detrimental to guest workers, leaving to President Barack Obama’s Labor Department a choice to leave in place or roll back Bush policies.

“What concerns me is that many of the advocates [for human rights for guest workers] aren’t proposing solutions, they’re only pointing out what is wrong,” Velásquez said. “I want to lay out a direction for where we need to go.”

The free, public forum is part of the College of Law’s Distinguished Speakers lecture series, which has featured Supreme Court Justices, prominent lawyers, judges, activists and scholars.

“We’ve been very successful bringing in a wide spectrum of renowned speakers in this series,” said Daniel Steinbock, associate dean for academic affairs of the College of Law. “Mr. Velásquez will be addressing an issue that effects the quality of life for many in northwest Ohio and for many more across the nation.”
