Granholm to sign Cobo Center expansion legislation

DETROIT, Jan. 16, 2009 (AP): Legislation to add much-needed convention space to aging Cobo Center is expected to be signed into law by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

Officials from Detroit and Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties are expected to join Granholm Friday afternoon for the signing ceremony at the downtown Detroit convention venue.

State lawmakers passed the legislation in December. It helps pave the way for a more than $270 million expansion of Cobo, which is home to the lucrative North American International Auto Show.

It also creates a separate authority to oversee Cobo. The authority would be made up of Detroit and the three surrounding counties. The board would have the power to sell bonds and collect tax revenue from hotels and other sources.
