Group plans to turn Cleveland's gray Flats green

CLEVELAND, Jan. 10 (AP): A group of nonprofit organizations in Cleveland has a new plan to turn part of the city's industrial Flats area from gray to green.

The group wants to build playgrounds, trails and parks along an abandoned railway and a vacant space on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River. The plan includes trails and two pedestrian bridges meant to link several neighborhoods to regional trails and waterways.

The cost of the plan hasn't been finalized, but it has the support of city and county officials.

Leaders of the nonprofit groups say they're optimistic about the plan despite obvious challenges.

The economic downturn has put several major projects on hold in the area, including a $522 million development effort on the east bank side of the Flats.
