Congresswoman Kaptur to donate pay increase to charities
Jan. 5, 2009: Continuing a practice that she began some 20 years ago, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur today announced that she will again donate any increase in her congressional pay to local charities, focusing on organizations that are designing sustainable solutions to the local hunger crisis.
“I believe it is only appropriate to decline any increase in salary when times are so hard for so many people,” Congresswoman Kaptur said. “At least we have the opportunity to help local organizations build forward in our community by addressing the issue of hunger systematically and creatively.”
Without congressional action to stop it, an automatic annual cost-of-living pay increase of $4,700 per Member will take effect this month. Congresswoman Kaptur has objected to the increase.

In 1990, Congresswoman Kaptur established the Kaptur Community Fund at the Toledo Community Foundation to receive pay raises she is required to receive, but chooses to forego. The Congresswoman distributes over $20,000.00 in after-tax funds annually to charities in the 9th District.
