Library News: Film addresses HIV and AIDS among African-American women
The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is partnering with Planned Parenthood of Northwest Ohio to present a free showing of the gripping documentary film All of Us, which addresses HIV and AIDS among African-American women.
The film, coming soon to Showtime Network, is scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday, November 10, 2008, at Mott Branch Library, 1085 Dorr St., and again from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday, November 17 at Kent Branch Library, 3101 Collingwood Blvd.
This timely, award-winning feature by Emily Abt, investigates the social factors that put African American women at the greatest risk for HIV/AIDS and exposes the common power struggle women across boundaries of race, class and country, face in their lives.
Film synopsis: In the South Bronx, Dr. Mehret Mandefro embarks on research to find out why black women are being infected with the HIV virus at an alarming rate. She takes us into the lives and relationships of two of her patients, Chevelle and Tara, as they identify and struggle with the social factors that put them at risk.
The goal of the film and related Web site (www.allofusthemovie.com) is to reach women at risk with life-saving information and to provide educators, activists and policy-makers with an effective media tool for social change.
Following the film, a question & answer session is scheduled lead by the Toledo Council of Black Nurses. Sherita Evans, an HIV/AIDS specialist at Planned Parenthood of Northwest Ohio, worked with Judy Jones, Mott Branch Library manager, and Faith Hairston, Kent Branch Library manager, to showcase All of Us at the Library.
