Bee Season is not over for Michigan students

The Championship Finals for the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee aired early this spring. And for many students across the country it signaled the end of the North American spelling bee contest.

However, bee season is far from over for students in Michigan. Students in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties have an opportunity to compete in the OfficialCityPrep’s Michigan Spelling Bee, which will be held in November, 2008—the spelling bee and workshops are open to students in grades 1-8 that attend schools in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.

There are three classes of competition:  Class I is for students in grades 1-3 who compete on teams of three. Class II is for students in grades 4 and 5, while Class III is for students in grades 6-8. This new spelling bee promises to be just as intellectually stimulating and fun as the national bee with cash and a laptop computer as prizes.

The seven dollar registration fee entitles participants to one 90-minute workshop per month (students can attend more if offered). During these workshops, students learn, word etymology and construction, spelling bee etiquette, strategies, and practice mock bees.  The workshops are designed to provide some assistance to students whose parents or schools cannot assist them with studying for the bee.

The next spelling bee workshop will be held Saturday, August 23, 2008, 10am-12pm, at the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit, 111 E. Kirby in Detroit’s cultural center.

The bee and accompanying workshops are sponsored by: OfficialCityPrep, Inc. and the Midtown Detroit Kumon Math and Reading Center.
