UMADAOP Lucas County “Pin Pals” scheduled

Toledo: This Thursday, July 24, 2008, the Lucas County chapter of the Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Program will hold a Father (Mentor)/ Son Bowling tournament called Pin Pals. It will take place at Toledo Sports Center, which located at 1516 Starr Avenue, beginning at 7:00 pm.

A mini grant from Leadership Toledo (YIPEE) was granted to UMADAOP to put on this event to improve the communication between father and sons in the Lucas County area. The age range is for junior high and senior high males.

Research shows that single parent homes are growing with most of the homes being headed by the mother. Our young males are not experiencing the positive male bond. Absent fathers are not taking their sons to the barbershop, ball games, or teaching them how to be productive members of society. Whereas mothers and daughters have an opportunity to do things together such as shopping, going to the salon, and talking to each other.

The name Pin Pals was chosen to also have youth write over the summer to a pen pal in Cincinnati at the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati and Cincinnati UMADAOP.

UMADAOP Lucas County is a community-based organization that provides health promotion, wellness activities and prevention services in order to help children, families and communities acquire and maintain healthy and productive lifestyles.

This event is associated with YWCA Teen Outreach Program (TOP) and The Firm Foundation. UMADAOP Lucas County is located at 2447 Nebraska Avenue.
