No, It’s Superman at 70!

The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is up, up and away with excitement as it presents a celebration titled Superman at 70!, a free informative program designed to honor the creation of the “Man of Steel” 70 years ago in the comics.

The Library’s Superman at 70! program is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2008, in the McMaster Center at Main Library, 325 Michigan St. Local comic book historian Jim Beard will host a special Superman retrospective featuring a live, exclusive interactive video conferencing chat with:

·         Geoff Johns, writer of Action Comics

·         James Robinson, writer of Superman

·         Sterling Gates, writer of Supergirl

Also see a timeline display chronicling the history of Superman comics, and a special exhibit featuring vintage comics and collectables and a life-sized recreation of Clark Kent’s office at the Daily Planet.

Beard will also host a special program for young people interested in the comic book industry and how comic books are created, from concept to publication on the following dates: July 7, 4 p.m. at Mott Branch, 1085 Dorr St.; July 14 at 2 p.m., Waterville Branch, 800 Michigan Ave., and July 14 at 7 p.m. at Oregon Branch, 3340 Dustin Rd., Oregon.

Superman hit the scene in June of 1938 and went on to become a pop-culture phenomenon and the catalyst for comics as we know them today.

Join the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library as we look back at his creation in Cleveland, Ohio to his present day status as a true American icon for young and old alike. The Library would like to thank Classic Antiques & Collectibles, Ron Hogue and Gerry Boose, local comic book historian Jim Beard

and other private collectors for their contributions to the Superman at 70! Exhibit.
