Let Go My LEGO®

The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library presents a LEGO®-building contest for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. The contest coincides with the Library’s Summer Reading Club theme: Catch the Reading Bug!

Youth will be asked to bring in their own Legos from home and build an imaginary or realistic bug of their own design in a 30-minute time limit at a branch in their neighborhood.

Library branch locations will hold scheduled contests to see who will compete for bugging, er, … bragging rights at a grand contest scheduled at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2008, in the Children’s Library at Main Library, 325 Michigan St. in downtown Toledo.

Birmingham Branch Library’s contest was held in early June.

Winners of the Library’s Lego® Grand Contest on July 26 will receive Legos of course! Ribbons of participation will also be awarded for all youth who try their hand at making their Lego® bug.

The LEGO® brand started in the year 1934 by a Danish master carpenter named Kirk Christiansen. In Danish, Lego loosely means to “play well” – in Latin, Lego means, “I put together.”

Originally known as a company which sold wooden toys, stepladders and even ironing boards, the Lego® brand is recognized for its colorful rectangular-shaped plastic pieces which snap together.
