US Supreme Court won't hear Ingham County church's case

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, June 13, 2008 (AP): The U.S. Supreme Court has denied a request to hear an Ingham County church's case against Meridian Township for refusing to allow an expansion plan.

The Okemos Christian Center sued the township in 2003 after the township rejected a request by the church to build an addition for a school.

In 2005, a federal judge ruled for the church. But the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati in December said restricting the facility's size doesn't necessarily restrict the free exercise of religion.

Township Supervisor Susan McGillicuddy tells the Lansing State Journal for a story Friday that Monday's high court decision confirms the township made the right choice. Pastor Craig Dumont says he doesn't know what the church will do.
