Latina leadership conference coming to Detroit
The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) will host the Latina Empowerment Conference at the Detroit Marriott, at the Renaissance Center, from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM on May 30, 2008. It follows on the heels of a successful women’s business expo presented by Cleveland’s Hispanic Business Association on May 16.
According to organizers, the Latina Empowerment Conference provides leadership training, inspiration and motivation to Latinas. The half-day event concentrates on leadership and professional development, networking, knowledge, and inspiration.
NHLI’s Immediate Past President, Marisa Rivera-Albert, begins the conference with a presentation on the opportunities and challenges Latinas face today. Rivera-Albert will present an overview of NHLI’s four-week executive leadership program.
Zulma X. Barrios, Senior Advisor with the Gallup Organization, will present “The Seven Demands of Leadership.” The seven demands are: Visioning, Maximizing Values, Challenging Experience, Mentoring, Building a Constituency, Making Sense of Experience, and Knowing Self. According to Barrios, leaders must meet these seven demands to maximize their leadership impact. Barrios will also explain how the seven demands can be used to shape leadership strategies.
The conference will conclude with a panel of Latinas in various professions. The panel includes Latina leaders: María L. Oxholm (Judge 3rd Circuit Court of Michigan), Marylou Olivarez Mason (Executive Director Michigan Commission on Spanish Speaking Affairs), María Capetillo (State Farm Insurance Companies agency), and Esther Martínez (General Motors Studio Designing Engineer). They will share their experiences and show how they became successful in their careers and personal lives.
The event is sponsored by State Farm Insurance Companies-Title Sponsor and General Motors as part of their ongoing commitment to the Latino community. The National Hispana Leadership Institute is a national non-profit organization dedicated to the education and leadership development of Latinas. NHLI’s mission is “To develop Hispanas as ethical world leaders through training, professional development, relationship building, community and world activism.”
