Volunteers sought for Start! Heart Walk
The American Heart Association is looking for individuals to serve as team captains for the Start! Toledo Heart Walk. Team captains are responsible for rallying their family, friends or co-workers to participate as walkers and raise funds for the Heart Walk.
The fun-filled event, which is expected to draw more than 4,000 walkers, will be held Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the University of Toledo Glass Bowl Stadium. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the non-competitive 1 to 3-mile walk that wanders throughout UT’s beautiful campus starts at 10 a.m.
Brooke Butler, the American Heart Association’s Start! Heart Walk director said the event is family-friendly. “Kids, babies, strollers and pets are all welcome. After the walk, everyone will return to the stadium for freebies, awareness activities and a community celebration.”
The fund raising goal for each team is $1,500. As a walker, participants gather contributions in advance. Prizes are awarded based on the amount each participant collects. Everyone who collects at least $100 will earn a T-shirt. There are also, many incentives, including a trip to Florida that team captains and walkers can win.
Money raised at the Start! Toledo Heart Walk will be used to support the American Heart Association’s fight against heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death and disability in the United States.

Brothers Dakota and Brody Congioloso, ages 3 and 5, are alive today because of research provided by the American Heart Association. Funds raised at Heart Walks have yielded important discoveries such as CPR, life-extending drugs, pacemakers, bypass surgery, and surgical techniques that repair heart defects in infants, children, and adults.
