University of Michigan offers reward for theft of gems

ANN ARBOR, March 19, 2008 (AP): The University of Michigan is offering a $1,000 reward related to the theft of tens of thousands of dollars worth of stones from its geology department.

Authorities say the gemstones were stolen sometime during the weekend from several display cases. The Ann Arbor News reports a thief or thieves smashed the cases and took the collection of rocks and minerals that had been mined in the 1800s.

The collection had been on display for 11 years.
