Two Detroit-area residents recognized as citizen diplomats

DETROIT, Jan. 21, 2008 (AP): A car dealer and a teacher from the Detroit area will be honored next month for their world outreach.

Tarik Daoud of Bloomfield Hills and Khris Nedam of Livonia are among six recipients selected for the first National Awards for Citizen Diplomacy. The Detroit Free Press reports the award is given by the U.S. Center for Diplomacy in Des Moines, Iowa.

Daoud hosts dignitaries from around the world through organizations such as the International Visitors Council of Detroit. He owns area Ford dealerships.

Nedam’s group Kids4AfghanKids has raised more than $100,000 to build two schools, a clinic and an orphanage in Afghanistan, where she taught from 1990 to 1994.

The honorees will be recognized February 12 in Washington, D.C.
