According to its Web site, in the l950s, U.S.-America “fell in love with the mambo and the best place to hear this electrifying music was at the Palladium Ballroom in New York City,” which from the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s achieved mythical status as the center of Afro-Caribbean music in the United States. Machito, Puente, and Rodríguez were the “Big 3” bandleaders who gave the Palladium a large measure of its glory—sold-out crowds came to see the now legendary musical battles that took place between them.
“When I contacted Tito Puente and Tito Rodriguez’s families, they were delighted with the idea,” Mario Grillo, Machito’s son, said in a telephone interview with La Prensa, making reference to recreating the “Big 3’s music.
Margaret Puente and Tito Rodríguez, Jr. offered their respective fathers’ original charges for use, along with the Machito scores.
“My father used to tell me, be a doctor, be a lawyer, because he knew how hard the life of an artist was…but I wanted to be a musician, so my mom made me practice everyday and she was watching me,…while she was drinking her coffee and cookies in the afternoon,” shared Machito Jr. “But both were very supportive.”
He recalled he was 5 years old when he appeared in stage for the first time with the legendaries of the mambo.
“When you come to see this band, you better wear an asbestos jacket, because we’re gonna burn you. I ain’t playing. It’s fire on top of fire on top of fire,” Grillo, said, making reference to the Big 3 Palladium Orchestra’s concert.
Called “the most brilliant large Latin Jazz ensemble this side of Havana,” by the Chicago Tribune, they will be performing Thursday, February 1, at 8:00 p.m. in Ann Arbor’s Hill Auditorium.

La Orquesta Big 3 Palladium presenta tributo al mambo
Ann Arbor: La Orquesta “The Big 3 Palladium” presenta un tributo a los líderes “Big 3”, Frank “Machito” Grillo, Tito Puente y Tito Rodríguez, al darle vida nuevamente a las canciones originales.
En los años 1950s, “América se enamoró del mambo y el mejor lugar para escuchar esta música electrizante era el Salón de Baile Palladium en la ciudad de New York,” en el cual entre mediados de los 40s hasta mediados de los 60s recibió el reconocimiento místico como el centro de la música Afro-Caribeña en los Estados Unidos. Machito, Tito Puente y Tito Rodríguez fueron los líderes de la banda los “Big 3” quienes dieron en gran medida la gloria a Palladium y multitudes fueron a ver a la batalla musical que se llevaba acabo entre ellos, la cual es una legendaria musical en la actualidad.
“Cuando contacté a las familias de Tito Puente y de Tito Rodríguez, ellos estuvieron encantados con la idea”, dijo Mario Grillo, el hijo de Machito, en una entrevista telefónica con La Prensa, haciendo referencia a recrear la música de los “Big 3”. Margaret Puente y Tito Rodríguez,Jr. ofrecieron los cargos originales de sus padres para usarlos, junto con los de Machito.
“Mi padre me solía decir, se doctor, se abogado, porque él sabía cuan dura era la vida de los artistas…” “pero yo quería ser músico, así fue que mi madre me hacía practicar todos los días y ella me miraba. Mientras se tomaba su café con galletas por la tarde…” compartió Machito Jr. “Pero ambos me daban apoyo”.
El recordó que su primera aparición en el escenario fue cuando tenía 5 años, con los legendarios del mambo.
“Cuando vienes a ver esta banda, debes vestirte con una chaqueta de asbestos, porque vamos a echar fuego. No estoy bromeando. Es fuego encima de fuego y encima de fuego”, Mario Grillo, dijo haciendo referencia al concierto de la Orquesta los Big 3 Palladium”.
Chicago Tribune los llamó “ el conjunto de jazz latino más grande y brillante de este lado de la Havana”.
