His work recalls the garbage, ruins, and stone-age tools that were left behind as evidence of spaces that were used, abandoned and perhaps forgotten. His captured images of cattle, cotton, and footprints are all indications that the land remains both used and in use.
• Elena Baca: Elena Baca received her MFA from the University of New Mexico and currently is an educator at Explora Science Center in Albuquerque. She has taught a variety of photography and printmaking courses at the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico Main and Branch Campus.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She states, “My inspiration for making pictures originates from a broad spectrum of experiences. I have always been interested in storytelling, and oral history, which somehow led me to eaves-dropping and the complexities of conversation that can lead to misunderstandings, and assumptions.”
• José L. Rodríguez: Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela in 1959, Rodríguez studied printmaking at Indiana University and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1987. He currently resides in Texas where he continues to exhibit.
The images in this exhibit represent an interest of José’s, which he has been pursuing over the last five years—developing portraits of real people whom the artist does not necessarily know. He “feels compelled to develop a story around. Some of the narratives are based on episodes from my life and others are based on characters from literature or music.”
• Jeffrey Dell: Jeffrey was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1969. He grew up in Oregon, in a small town called McMinnville, 40 miles south of Portland. In 1987, he began college at Hamline University in St. Paul, studying ceramics, and developed a passion for printmaking during his senior year.
From 1998 to 2000, Jeffrey received the fellowship at The Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, in Venice, Italy. Since then, Jeffrey has been teaching printmaking at Texas State University-San Marcos, and received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2006. Jeffrey also teaches in Florence in May/June each year, as well as a two-week class in August at the Scuola in Venice.
• Marcella Hackbardt is an associate professor at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Her work was included in the group show Beautiful Dreamer at Spaces Gallery in Cleveland in 2005, as well as in shows in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Santa Fe.
She has organized and curated exhibitions including Fresh: Art and Culture and The Photography of Invention featuring historic and contemporary wet plate collodion photography. Her work tackles weighty topics like gender issues, our perception of the family, and disruptive narrative.
