HIV integration grant funded for high risk population
Nov. 20, 2007: Planned Parenthood of Northwest Ohio received a $100,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Health to integrate HIV testing into its Title X family planning services. The grant funds a full time certified HIV counselor and tester as well as the purchase of rapid, oral testing devices. The goal is to test 3,000 patients, who are at or below poverty level in Lucas County, over the next year.
A person who accesses Planned Parenthood services for STI exposure and treatment, pregnancy testing or emergency contraception may have been exposed to HIV and may be unaware of that exposure. The incidence of HIV/AIDS in Ohio is continuing to increase substantially and is more prevalent in and around inner city areas. Lucas County has the fifth highest rate of persons known to be living with HIV/AIDS of any major metropolitan county in Ohio.
The HIV Integration project provides encouragement to test for HIV to diverse clients, who are seeking reproductive health services. It is increasingly important that people get tested and know their status, not only for their own awareness, but also to assist in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS.
HIV testing is now available Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Wednesdays 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, Fridays 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, and Saturdays 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
