La Explosiva celebrates 6 years of community radio broadcasting


Historic Ft. Wayne: Detroit’s Latino community has more than doubled in the last decade; thousands of Latino entrepreneurs chose the Motor City to open business, embracing the economy of the city.


Last weekend, many of those entrepreneurs were part of the festivities, celebrating the anniversary of radio station WSDS La Explosiva 1480 AM.


La Explosiva 1480 AM was launched six years ago with the support of José Luis Vásquez a Latino immigrant, who wanted to create a broadcast system, airing news, music, and events.


Música, comida mexicana, y amistad were on hand to congratulate La Explosiva, which airs 24/7.


According to Alejandro Resendez, its general manager and programming director, WSDS La Explosiva 1480 AM has provided the Latino community with vital news, music, and events—the radio station assists Latino organizations schedule public programs, broadcasts public service announcements, and organizes special outreach programs in the Metro Detroit area.


According to Resendez, La Explosiva reaches listeners in Wayne County, and parts of Washtenaw, Oakland, and Livingston Counties. It is licensed to Birach Broadcasting Corporation, with programming at 580 W. Clark Road, Ypsilanti.
