Continuous entertainment will be provided as local and international bands and dancers take center stage. Opening the day’s festivities is the musical trio Sentir Latino as they perform “Journey to Latin America,” featuring music and songs from many different Latin countries. The colorful folkloric dancers Colombia Viva, from Colombia, will perform from 1:00 – 2:00, followed by local favorite Justo Saborit Latin Soul Band, with their Latin jazz blend of music.
New to Fiesta this year is the mariachi band Joya de México, performing from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. The unique art form flamenco will be presented by the Fairmont Spanish Dancers from the Fairmount Center for the Arts from 5:00 – 6:00. Conjuntoriqueña will top the day off with its big band sound of mixed Latin American music, including salsa and merengue.
Fiesta Latina is a family-oriented event with activities provided all day for young and old alike. Face-painting, flower-making, piñata and a jalapeño pepper-eating contest are just some of the children’s activities.
Each year local nurseries and other businesses put together teams of men to face off in a friendly tug-of-war competition which has become a favorite event of the festival. This year a tug-of-war for children has also been scheduled. Vendors will be on site providing Latino arts and crafts and food including Luisa’s Mexican Grill.
Fiesta Latina is at Stanton Park, 5585 Chapel Rd., from noon to 8:00 p.m., rain or shine. Admission is $5.00/person, children under 12 are admitted gratis. For information call Sonia Brotzman at 440-428-2262 or Almi de la Fuente at 440-428-8672 or RRCAA at 440-428-5913.
